I am not a BIG movie buff. I very rarely visit the movie theatre and will watch at least 1-2 movies on Netflix or OnDemand each week. But at Christmas, I have go-to movies that give you all the warm and fuzzies.
Holiday Movie Essentials
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
No holiday could ever be more touching, so genuinely moving, more truly uplifting or more down to earth than Christmas with the Griswolds. It’ll make you want to OVER decorate your house, buy the biggest tree in the lot (not chopping it down in the woods) and sing Bing Crosby’s Mele Kalikimaka (Hawaiian Christmas Song).
I literally laughed out loud when I saw the greatest meme comparing Prince Harry and Megan Markle to the young characters in Love, Actually. But honestly, my favorite part of this movie is actually the opening scene…
‘Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport. General opinion started to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. Seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy but it’s always there. Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from people on board were messages of hate or revenge, they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling, you’ll find that love actually is all around.’
Before you tune into this one, remember your audience and that there are characters that film a porn so there are brief questionable scenes. And rejoice when Mariah’s All I Want for Christmas is what brings “young Harry + Megan” together.
I do love a good cry and this movie always gets me – and I’m not alone, Man Repeller agrees. SJP is perfectly uptight and quickly unravels. It is thoroughly entertaining to see her face light up when she meets Amy’s cherry poppin’ daddy and buy the whole bar a round of drinks in his honor. Oh, who doesn’t want to drool over Dermot Mulroney and Luke Wilson?
Man Repeller pointed out a few very valid wardrobe discrepancies – seriously, who packs 3 coats? I can overlook all of that when the soundtrack is killer and Jude Law’s Mr. Napkinhead is adorable. I’m sure you’ll be inspired to share a few “Meet Cute” ideas of your own (or the revisit the Top 10).
Sassy’s Lifehack
As the holiday party circuit is upon us, don’t forget to tune into the Yule log to really set the mood. In Florida, it takes a faux fireplace to even make it seem like winter! Check out this Netflix holiday favorite.
Let this be a reminder to queue up your favorite holiday flicks and curl up on the couch with some Abuelita Mexican hot chocolate with your loved ones. Vegging out is always better together on the Melatonin Couch!
