About Dr. Pimple Popper
Dr. Sandra Lee is a dermatologist based in Upland, CA that has amassed over 2.6 million followers on her Instagram account (@DrPimplePopper) and over 3.1 million subscribers to her YouTube channel (DrSandraLee), where her videos average 2 million views per day. She wants to show people what she does and posts videos ranging from the blackhead extraction to educational videos featuring her expertise in general and cosmetic dermatology and surgery. If this is all new to you, Refinery29 has a round up the best of videos here.
My fascination with the ‘popping’ videos has been directed more so to the patients that travel from Saudi Arabia, Canada and from across the U.S to seek extractions from Dr. Sandra Lee. The man that has a unicorn bump on his forehead, must have seen a local dermatologist before considering taking a flight for treatment. Well after a bit of research, an interview with Forbes revealed some answers.
It’s good for my patients that have blackheads, because insurance doesn’t cover the removal. So, many dermatologists we won’t remove them, they say, “You have a blackhead there but don’t worry about it.” But now, I’ll do the extractions for free if my patients let me videotape and use the video. Of course, I make them anonymous and remove anything identifying.
I win because I get to take it out and put the video on YouTube. At least I get some sort of payment for that, as opposed to me doing it totally for free.
And all of these people who love popping videos win because they get to watch it on YouTube. There’s some kind of obsessive quality, because when you watch it sucks you in. I don’t exactly know what it is either, but you do get addicted to it. I see that all the time. People say, “This is so gross yet oddly satisfying. This is so nasty that I can’t stop watching.”
Now that there is some piece of mind as so to how this whole poppin’ obsession is mutually beneficial, will you be tuning in on Wednesday?
