make grey’s music great again

Y’all, I am one of the few that have dedicated myself to watching more than 300 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. Why? When it premiered in 2005, it became a ritual in college to round up the gals with some Domino’s Chicken Kickers to soak in the medical drama & romance, and I’m a loyal gal and stuck with it. That’s right; I could probably be a surgeon by now had I dedicated the past 10+ years to medicine instead of TV drama.

Grey’s Anatomy Music

One of my favorite takeaways from the first couple of seasons was the soundtrack. TuneFind has a catalog of 1,590 songs featured on Grey’s. The Fray gained popularity when featured “How to Save a Life” in the “Superstition” episode of the shows second season (first aired on March 19, 2006). How can you forget the emotions that Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” evoked after Denny dies? Mat Kearney is another artist that I have discovered and followed since Grey’s Anatomy. I even started a playlist on iTunes of some of my favorite songs from those soundtracks that have made it to Spotify. (If you need a refresher on my love of Spotify CLICK HERE). Music is not always in the background of the storyline. Besties Christina Yang (man, I miss her!) and Meredith Grey were known to work out their issues in a tequila-fueled dance party.

Ok, Sass, you love the indie bands that Grey’s has catapulted so what is the problem? In 2015/Season 12 I noticed that the tunes had taken a very different turn. Here’s a sampling of the COVERS of Top 40/Pop songs invaded that soundtrack. I can’t EVEN! I love a cover but when I’ve admired discovering new music for years, the last thing I would expect is to hear Rhianna’s latest jam during open heart surgery. No. Nope. Not having it.

I rant about something I used to rave about so adamantly. Please, please bring back the music producer wizards that have held my attention to this beloved Shondaland show. I mean, if it’s a Year of YES then it should be no difficult task. If you need inspiration, the folks from Gossip Girl and The OC did a stellar job of crafting great soundtracks as well.
