Mi casa es su casa

As I shared in my 2018 Rose & Thorn post, I became a homeowner late last year. I am so lucky to have walked into a damn near perfect townhouse that needed minimal work. The main projects I wanted to tackle before even moving in were to replace the 10-year old carpeting and building out my dream master closet. Aside from those two things, there have been a few small projects that I have wanted to really make the place seem suitable for me and my lifestyle.

Never-Ending Carpet Ride

Before: Upstairs Hallway

Although the carpeting was in fairly good condition considering that it was indeed 10-years old, just looking at it made me sneeze. The stairs and 2nd floor were all carpeted, with the exception of the 2 bathrooms and laundry room. Being that the laundry room is upstairs, I opted to replace the carpet with Pergo Outlast+ laminate from Home Depot because it is 100% Waterproof for Life.

The exact flooring I chose and love is Paradise Jatoba. The flooring brings together vibrant brown, red and gold colors. The house is 50 shades of beige with a few accent walls of sage green so the flooring brightens up the space. The install in the bedrooms and hallways was a solo DIY project completed in 1.5 days.

After: Upstairs Hallway

Stairs. Oh, boy. The stairs have thrown me for a loop. I lived with carpeting on the stairs for 3 months as I’ve dwelled on what to do. I’ve been debating between staining the treads, painting them all white, installing a runner, or just giving up and leaving it as it is. The way the stairs are, there are 2 landings so I always hesitated on a runner with those breaks. That is until I came across the Helmick Hacienda DIY Stair Runner tutorial in exactly the same style of my stairs and it looked so simply perfect.

This is a work in progress but the plan is to put the laminate on the landings, paint the treads white to match the trim & moldings, and lay down the runner. I took advantage of Overstock’s President’s Day Sale and ordered the runners in grey cotton just last week. Stay tuned!
