drink your veggies

My father would drink a fresh carrot and apple juice almost every morning before work. We had The Original Jack LaLanne Power Juicer direct from the infomercial. There’s something about juicing your fruits and vegetables that make them tastier. Speaking of tasty, remember my Sassy Smoothie Bowls? I’ll go through phases where I am very regimented about my morning routine with my modified (a.k.a. sweeter) version of Joe Cross’ Mean Green juice recipe.

First of all, I’ll buy all of the following ingredients in bulk at BJ’s and they’ll usually last me a week. I’ll cut the morning’s portion of fruits and veggies the night before so I can grab and go in the morning. Keeping clean up and tasks in the morning to an absolute minimum.

sassy’s lean mean green

1/2 cucumber
4 celery stalks
1 green apple
1 kiwi
1 cup pineapple cubes (fresh or frozen)
2 handfuls of kale (sometimes kale & spinach)
1/2 lemon
1 in piece of ginger

Directions:
1. Throw all of those tasty bits into the juicer and chug it!

I’ll leave it to an expert to explain the do’s and don’ts of green juice and why you should chug it. HERE

Last weekend, my friends Jake and Alissa stayed over and I made them a juice for breakfast. Mainly because Jake was curious to see how easy it as to use and what all was involved. I have used a Breville Juice Fountain for the over 4 years and have found it to be very sturdy. I love that all of the parts are dishwasher safe so I can make a juice and leave them soaking to load into the dishwasher later if I’m running behind in the morning. Since my exact model juicer is no longer available, I’d recommend the Breville Juice Fountain Plus 850-Watt Juice Extractor.

At some point, Madre asked me to pick up some chlorophyll for her at Whole Foods and I came across Amazing Grass Green Superfood Organic Powder with Wheat Grass and Greens. I gave it a shot and began adding it to my green juice to round it out with all of the “nutrient-rich superfoods” it was missing. But wait, what are the SUPER greens really good for? Dr. Amy Myers has been promoting her Clean Greens product as a daily juicing replacement for these simple reasons:

  • Help alkalize your body and improve a healthy PH balance
  • Source of organic nutrition on the go
  • Mitigate stress & balance hormonal health
  • Boosts detoxification from mold & heavy metals
  • Aids leaky gut or poor digestion & nutrient absorption

Now, I can save time and money with powdered greens! Amazing Grass offers little stick packets at Whole Foods so you can sample the various flavors before committing to one. I understand that Costco has the Antioxidant flavor but I am a fan of the Lemon-Lime Energy flavor.

My daily green juice has now evolved into a quick and easy 4-ingredient drink. It’s a hybrid of my favorite ingredients for a brain-boosting Bulletproof coffee combined with the hydrating benefits of potassium-rich coconut water and superfoods. To be honest, collagen is one of my absolute favorite supplements and I use it every single day!

Beauty Green Fuel

11 ounces coconut water

1 scoop of green superfood powder

1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons MCT oil

1 scoop of collagen peptides

Directions:

  1. Throw all ingredients into a NutriBullet or blender for a quick mix and enjoy!

I drink my Beauty Green Fuel on the go. I make sure to take it in a stainless steel cup as not to stain it with the bright green contents. The good news is that all of the ingredients can be purchased on a sample basis. Whole Foods & Amazon offer single-serving samples of Amazing Grass Green Superfoods, Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil GoPacks, and Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides sticks.

Whether you decide to juice or powder route, I hope you’ll make an effort to get your daily servings of fruit and veggies. If I inspired one of you to make a swap, I’ll consider it a win. Cheers!

XX, Sassy
