Never lose the fashion, darlin’. That’s been my motto for years. Sure, the mask life is new and uncomfortable, but it’s also given me an excuse to accessorize. When running errands and jumping in & out of the car, it’s easy to forget your mask. That’s why a mask necklace is perfect!
I was inspired by the Jill & Ally x Summer Strings Mask Candy Collection, I was determined to find a DIY to make my own fancy mask jewelry. I found a YouTube video, pick up and headed to Joann Fabrics to spend a gift card, and came home ready to get my craftin’ on. I’ve since purchased items from Amazon and Michael’s, but I ultimately like the hildie & jo bead selection at Joann.
DIY Needs:
- Crimping beads
- Lobster clasps
- Bead stringing wire
- Spacer beads
- Seed beads – White
- Freshwater pearls
- Pearl charms
I already had pliers and tiny wire cutters at home, so I was all set on the hardware front. I would recommend looking at 4-6 mm beads or larger. I made the mistake of buying tiny seed beads (similar) and it was painful to string such a little bead that it made me appreciate handmade items.
Now when I’m on the couch catching up on The Real Housewives or Netflix, I’ll often be working on a new beading creation. I love the creativity of mixing the different color combos and ultimately, repurposing items I already have. Once I had the lobster claps, I knew that I could repurpose fashion jewelry necklaces and chains rather simply. I took an old Anthropologie necklace (similar), Alex & Ani bracelets (similar), and a few store-bought chains (curb link chain and bead chain).
Upgrade options
I’ve seen new styles to include rubber eyeglass holders, so you can attach sunglasses or readers to the necklace and I’m all about the multi-use. For the little kiddos, I bought letter beads and flat polymer clay beads in pastel and rainbow colors to create personalized and colorful styles. I made myself a “Sass” bracelet with these flat + letter beads.
Whether you’re inspired to get to craftin’ or want to order a Fancy Mask Necklace, tell me about it! It’s been a really fun past time and I love showing off these creations.
