sassy rituals: clean candles

How do prioritize your self-care routine? I, for one, make it a point on Sundays to draw an Epsom salt bubble bath, light a candle, and unwind with my iPad and the latest Bravo reality TV. You could call it a “Sassy Ritual.” Beyond my Sunday routine, I find candles to be one of the inexpensive ways to routinely practice self-care.

The act of lighting a candle will always set to mood, and hopefully, fill the room with a pleasant scent. It is one of the key elements of making a cozy home (HERE). But, as I’ve worked towards keeping a clean home (HERE), not all candles are created equal. You may have come across some alarming clickbait articles asking, “Are candles toxic?” This article clearly took the myth-buster approach and the bottom line is, there are alternatives to minimize health risks or environmental impacts. Learn more HERE.

This made me think about taking matters into my own hands and making my own natural candles. Could you think of a better way to pass time during a pandemic than fragrance blending and melting wax in my kitchen? Me neither! As a true hobbyist, I purchased a starter kit from Paddywax with the tools, watched a million YouTube videos from candle makers, and researched clean fragrances, and voila – SASSY RITUAL Candles.

Sassy Ritual: Mason Jar Candles

These candles are hand-poured with a coconut and soy blend wax in small batches and scented with 100% phthalate-free fragrance oils. The goal is to ensure that these handcrafted products can offer peace of mind and deliver clean, modern scents.

My signature scents are Rosemary & Sage and Citrus Agave. Rosemary & Sage is a great kitchen candle for lovers of green and herbal scents. Citrus Agave is a delightful sweet citrus blend that fans of the popular Anthropologie Volcano-type scent will adore.

Candles come in all shapes and sizes, and the vessel will determine the best use and impact of the scent. The mason jar candles pictured hold 10 oz. candles. There are also metallic tins that are slightly larger with 12-14 oz, but the larger opening allows for some fun + floral toppings, for example, the lavender candle pictured.

Sassy Rituals: Metallic Tin Candles

As I continue to experiment, my favorite idea is to upcycle beloved wine bottles and wooden wicks. I’m still working on perfecting the glass cutting and blending scents that fit the bill. Imagine a The Palm by Whispering Angel Rosé candle with a fresh Grapefruit & Mint scent and pink hue or a Walt Pinot Noir paired with Pomegranate Bitters.

As I’m testing and crafting new candles, it’s a fun way to pass the time while also pouring my passions into something. Making a product that is natural and nontoxic is my top priority. A pretty vessel and yummy smell is just the icing on the cake for a clean-burning candle.
