resolve to do better

resolve to do better

Did you resolve to do better in 2018? Better in work/life balance, health, relationships or fitness? These resolutions require taking action well after the January hype has come and gone. I didn’t write down any resolutions this year, but I do want to make an effort to improve in all the above. I work well with structure so creating a clear plan of “attack” will lead to success. When I sign up for a race, my first objective is always mapping out a training schedule and entering workouts into iCal as reminders of long runs and distances leading up to race day. I can’t strictly rely on 3-4 days a week of running for my workouts. In comes ClassPass to break up the mundane!

Resolution Solution: ClassPass

What is ClassPass? Directly from their site: “ClassPass is a new kind of gym membership that grants you access to thousands of different classes at studios and gyms in your city and around the world.”

Let’s me first rave about ClassPass, it’s a great idea, and I was offered 35 FREE CREDITS FOR A MONTH to visit any studio up to 2 times. I was able to setup and preview the studios available in the Miami/South Florida Metro area to find FlyWheel, Cycle Bar and Barry’s Bootcamp as a few local options, WHAHOO! 35 credits allowed me to attend six different classes over the course of a month. I probably could have been to more studios, but there are slim pickings here in Palm Beach County. Classes range from 4-8+ credits. After you visit a studio twice in a month, you may book more workouts for additional credits. That’s what I did as I enjoyed classes at Vault Fitness’ multiple locations.

Southern Palm Beach County has the most significant cluster of studios. It would have to be a darn good class for me to drive 30-40 minutes to sweat it out! I also had the option to use my credits in a “Flex” Metro area so while I was in Austin for race weekend, I could have taken a class. I chose to eat and drink my way through town instead. Booking is easy as ClassPass allows you to filter by date/time, credits, region (see above), activities (yoga, strength training, cycling, etc.), studios and amenities.

Vault Fitness

I have stalked Vault’s Instagram for months now. They always post the new arrivals to the boutique featuring the cutest athleisure fashions. I was certainly stoked to finally get into their different studios (West Palm and West Boca locations)!

TRX Fusion I became familiar with TRX at OrangeTheory Fitness as it was usually just a portion of the strength training intervals. This class was entirely using TRX. Essentially your body in some variation of a plank – abs, legs, and arms are all engaged. It was a killer total body workout that hurt so good!

Tread & Shred Speaking of OTF, this Tread & Shred class was the most similar. This class is only available at the West Boca Raton. The first portion of the class consists of 20-30 minutes of running intervals on the fancy schmancy Woodway Treadmills followed by a weight room routine. Classes are small so that the instructor can provide advice on proper form and modifications. I loved this class and took it twice. According to my Fitbit, I burned an average of 400 calories on the treadmill portion of class alone.

Ripped Ride This was an abbreviated spin class at the smaller West Palm location. A basic Schwinn spin bike with no mileage info to log for Strava bragging rights. It was just a fun cardio blast!

Velocity Cycling

This studio is in downtown West Palm Beach between Fern and Evernia on Dixie. Yup, just steps away from the WPB Brewery if you want to carb up after a spin 😉

Velocity 60 Again, basic Schwinn spin bikes with no stats BUT there are TVs at the front of the class that stream Olympic Cycling or Tour de France events. Those videos were a good distraction to help the hour pass.

Rant

I would invest in a ClassPass membership if I lived closer to the studios available. I’d be thrilled to see gyms in my area hop on the CP bandwagon and offer class or gym time. I certainly enjoyed the option to sprinkle different workout into my weekly routine. And of course, since I was booking classes, I felt obligated to show up!
